It is simply the practice of applying oil to the body with mindful massage—often before a warm shower or bath. For beginners, you do not need a complicated routine, dozens of products, or an expensive spa appointment. A suitable body oil, a towel, a few quiet minutes, and optionally a smooth wooden massage tool can be enough to create a comforting ritual. ...

Natural Oils, Hair Packs, Herbs & Daily Rituals for Healthy Hair

In Ayurveda, hair is considered a byproduct of asthi dhatu — the bone tissue — and its health mirrors what’s happening inside the body. That’s why two people can follow the exact same shampoo routine and get completely different results: their hair is being shaped by different doshas.

Once you know whether your hair leans Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, you can stop guessing and start choosing oils, hair packs, and rituals that actually work with your constitution instead of against it.

1

Find Your Hair Dosha

 Vata Hair

Dry, thin, frizzy, prone to split ends and rough texture. Hair fall increases under stress or during cold, windy weather. Curls tend to be tighter or more unpredictable.

 Pitta Hair

Fine, soft, straight or slightly wavy, prone to premature greying, early thinning, and a warm or sensitive scalp. Hair may feel oily at the roots but dry at the tips.

 Kapha Hair

Thick, strong, wavy or oily, generally lustrous, but prone to an oily scalp, dandruff, and slower hair growth cycles.

Natural Oils for Your Dosha

VATA
Warm, grounding oils — sesame oil, almond oil, and warm bhringraj oil calm dryness and frizz. A warm oil scalp massage (Shiro Abhyanga) two to three times a week is especially balancing.
PITTA
Cooling oils — coconut oil, aloe vera–infused oil, and bhringraj–brahmi blends soothe scalp heat and support pigment retention. Apply at room temperature rather than heated.
KAPHA
Light, stimulating oils — mustard oil, castor oil in small amounts, and rosemary–infused light oils encourage circulation without weighing hair down. Less is more.

Hair Packs by Dosha

Vata pack: Mashed banana or avocado with a spoon of warm sesame oil and a little honey — deeply moisturising for dry, brittle strands.

Pitta pack: Aloe vera gel with a few drops of coconut oil and rose water — cooling and calming for a sensitive, warm scalp.

Kapha pack: Multani mitti (fuller’s earth) with lemon juice and a pinch of neem powder — clarifying for an oily, congested scalp.

Herbs Every Dosha Can Rely On

  • Bhringraj — known as the “king of hair,” supports growth and reduces premature greying across all doshas.
  • Amla — tridoshic and rich in natural antioxidants; strengthens roots and adds shine.
  • Brahmi — calms the scalp and mind together, useful for stress-related hair fall.
  • Shikakai and hibiscus — gentle, natural cleansers that clean without stripping the scalp’s natural oils.
5

Daily Rituals for Long-Term Hair Health

✓  Oil the scalp consistently rather than occasionally — consistency matters more than quantity.

✓  Comb gently with a wide-tooth wooden comb to reduce breakage.

✓  Eat dosha-appropriate meals — hair health in Ayurveda starts with digestion (agni).

✓  Sleep on time. Disrupted sleep aggravates Vata and shows up first in hair and skin.
